Welcome to Reinwent Monday
Welcome to the Gift Database! It’s full of really creative gift ideas. It is not a list of gadgets or gizmos that you can simply purchase. Although…sometimes I do link to example items or other cool things.
It is a database of ideas that will need a bit of thought or personalization. To make a gift really special - you have to personalize it! Personalization is the key to transforming a creative idea into a perfect gift. This does not mean you have to whittle a tree trunk into a small trinket with their name on it, but give a little extra thought and effort to the gift. Make it about them.
Most of the ideas can be used for any person at any age for any occasion within any budget. However, some ideas only really fit one gender, occasion or age range.

Yes, the infamous bottle of wine. It is almost as easy as the gift card, esp. if you know the wine is good. A bottle of wine or spirits is the perfect gift to personalize on any budget. You can use a personalization service or you can DIY. And don't think that if you choose to get crafty you have to create the design yourself. You can always hire someone on Fiverr or Upwork to create it for you. See the full post Who Need a Drink? for all the details . Its kinda long, so maybe umm grab a drink first 😉
What in the world do I get her? He is impossible to shop for! They said they don't need anything. Crap! I'm OUT OF TIME and have no clue what to buy… Here is my GO TO GIFT when I'm out of time, energy or ideas - towels. I know that sounds boring and maybe even ridiculous, but trust me a set of nice soft new luxurious bath towels are a hit every time. I have never used this one and it disappointed. Tip: you can always buy white towels if you don't know the right color to get! Here is a sample set.
Your significant other: I have nothing to wear
You: you look great in everything
Your thought ...what??? you have a closet packed with clothes!
Maybe it's time to hire a stylist for your loved one. An In-Home Stylist will help determine things like which colors are best for their complexion, how to use what is already in their closet and what items are missing – or which pieces need to go!
Take the idea of a Pub Crawl, but instead of having a frosty beverage, have the house specialty or a favorite dish. You can make your food crawl a trip down memory lane and hit all your favorite places together or take your foodie to the Top 5 Must Eat Places in your area and get one dish from each to share. Don't forget to take this idea on the road! It is perfect for trying out top or unique places while on vacation! A dessert crawl with the kiddos! 🙂
Who doesn't love to get a bounty of gifts for their birthday? This one is simple- give the same amount of gifts as their age. The gifts can be as small or large as you want! (seriously - you can get a lot at a dollar store!) This can easily be made into a tradition for the kids in your life.
My grandma use to give all of us money in our birthday card that equaled our age, plus $1. The $1 was for luck to get you to the next year. She passed 14 years ago, but every birthday I still think...my granny would've given me XX dollars. It seems like a silly little thing, but it left a lifetime impression of love.
Ok – maybe not every day…go weekly or monthly! Pick a day of the week and give your loved one a gift (i.e. a gift card for a cup of coffee every Monday or lottery ticket every Wednesday or flowers every Friday)
Monthly options abound...you can Google gift of the month and you’ll find a gazillion websites offering monthly gifts for everything. Seriously anything you can think of! How about Pickled Veggies? Or Lobster?
This is perfect because you make an impact all year and the gift can be as small or large as you want!
There are few gifts better than a Personal Organizer for your home, so give the gift that keeps on giving – the gift of organization! You can hire a professional to help organize anything from a closet to a whole house. (or an office - can you actually see what your friend's desk is made out of???)
Depending on the size of the job, this can get $$$. So if on a budget, you can read up on organizational tips and do this yourself- a personalized organizing gift certificate! (Trip together to get some bins/folders/trash bags included!)
Simple. Simple. Simple. Buy 3 books for someone to express things you want to do with them. I tend to add extras to this gift package...something that ties back to one of the books or the theme of the books if a set. Example: For a significant other you can get (1) a travel companion to a place you want to go, (2) a book about baseball fields or must see ballets and (3) a bedside book- to, umm… spice it up! See complete examples in my post How to be a Gift Giving Genius!
It's my birthday too! This gift takes some time, but believe me it's sooo cool! Google will be your friend on this one. Find out who was born on the same day, all the best things that happened in the birth year and make a Birth Day Basket. You can include movies, books, music, and art of famous people born on the same day. You can also include things from the birth year - a book on an event that took place, Oscar winning films or a compilation of all the number one songs from that year. It will take some research, but it will be a hit!
Camping is a state of mind. There are many ways to bring camping inside (or in the backyard). You do not need to go a camp ground to camp. You can set a tent up in the living room, garage or backyard. You can make this a cool children's birthday party or a romantic camp-in night. Make hotdogs, s'mores and Jiffy Pop over a camp fire - easily made in a metal tub in the backyard. Can't make a camp fire- how about grilling or fondue? Don't forget to turn out all the lights and use candles or lanterns. I have sooo many homebound camping idea, but so little space to write. I will do a full post on this one soon but to get you started check out what Pinterest has to say...
200 channels and nothing to watch won't be a problem when you give someone a membership to Netflix or Hulu. Of course you know I cant let you just put a membership gift card in an envelope! There are many ways to jazz this gift up: add it to a box of popcorn and candies or a basket with all the ingredients for a favorite recipe and set a date to make dinner and watch movie together.
I love this gift! First off- you can get this together in under 15 minutes. Secondly -it makes an impact. Go to local restaurants in your area (or a place like Wal-Mart that sells all kinds of gift cards) and pick up several gift certificates for different restaurants. Each one should cover a simple lunch. Present them in one nice card with a well thought out note.
This is a perfect idea for young professionals, who might still be a bit cash strapped, or a stay at home parent who could really use a lunch out with another adult!
After our first baby, I used this as an anniversary present for my husband. I did it for dinners...same concept just more of a splurge. I bought 12 gift cards so we could have date night each month that year and not lose sight of each other - easy to do with a newborn at home!
Too many cooks in the kitchen? No, just too many cooking options! Private cooking lessons can be fun, informative and if you want...intimate. And there are so many options: you can arrange a single lesson or multiple lessons - in your home, at a school or at your favorite restaurant - Dessert, entree or both - group event, set of lessons for one, a single lesson for two... a private chef at home for an intimate lesson for two is just as great as a dessert cooking party for a group of kids.
On a budget - go to one of the best restaurants in town and ask if one of the sous chefs provides lessons or a seasoned line cook can teach amazing skills as well. I once had a friend learning to be a line cook teach me how to properly cut an onion- yes there is a proper and simple way to do that! It was amazing. (Side Note- I can't cook and most of the meals I attempt are bad, but hey that doesn't make this idea bad!)
If you have a sports fanatic, this idea is for you! I have to admit upfront this one can be a bit pricey depending on what you do. Official Team Equipment! Buy a helmet and get official sports stickers for the helmet from their favorite sports team. You can buy an official helmet online (places like Amazon or Ebay) Most equipment managers will send you stickers if you call and request them. My dad has done this several times and always had a great experience. You can also order official jerseys and other gear from teams or national leagues. Many players will also sign items if you request it. Seriously, call the equipment manager and he will often help you process these requests.
My prize possession: I absolutely LOVE the Cubs and my favorite player is Mark Grace. In fact, I was in love with him when I was about 14. Anyway, I was going to some games with my brother and he knew a I needed a new jersey (missing buttons was the least of my issues on my current jersey) so he set out to buy me a new Mark Grace jersey. So after weeks of searching with zero luck, he finally called the Cubs equipment manager and asked where he could get a Mark Grace jersey and the guy said no where he knew of, but he could make it for me. It came in about 2 months after my birthday, but totally worth it!
Who doesn't love day trips? Give your kid a Day Trip Grab Bag. Get a bag, or a box, or a hat, and put 5-10 day trips inside and let him or her pull one out when you have a free day. All you have to do is research what is within a couple hours of your home – camping, the beach, a park, museum, theme park or maybe even a dude ranch or working farm...
Ready for the adult twist? This is a perfect anniversary gift. I don't know about you, but date night can get to be "dinner and a movie" night. This is the perfect way to do some new and interesting things, and also adds the element of surprise. Even you won't know which date will be pulled out of the hat.
If you are going out of town and will miss a holiday, birthday or romantic event, send your loved one a gift before you go. If you live in a city you can have almost anything messengered , so skip the flowers and go for the nice bottle of wine or beautiful scarf. Most businesses take online or over the phone payments and messengers pick up and deliver anywhere in the city. Not in a city? Pre-shop and leave it with a friend to deliver for you.
Or are they going somewhere? Call the hotel and have some flowers or a cheese and fruit plate delivered to the room. My husband did this for me when I was away on a business trip on my birthday. It was an amazing surprise and I LOVED IT!
Need a new idea for the old bachelorette party? It is fun to hit the town and paint it red, but a "I'm the Bride" t-shirt doesn’t cut it. Go to a thrift store or eBay and get the ugliest wedding dress you can find for your bride. (I just searched Ebay and there were 106 results for white wedding dresses under $25!) Have her wear that out for her party and make sure to take lots of fabric markers. Have random people write her messages on the dress. It makes the night so much fun and reading the notes later is always a good time. You'll be amazed at the people that will come up to your group and what they'll write!
And MP3 players killed the mix tape! But not the idea…. Get an MP3 player or USB and pre-load songs that make you think of that person. Romance? Toss on those ballads! School year good-byes? Add all the hits of the year and those must hear party tunes! If you really want to go "old school" get a USB disguised as a cassette tape! (yes- I grew up in the 80's!) 🙂
This is also a GREAT baby shower gift. Get a stuffed animal MP3 and add all the classic nursery rhymes.
Go beyond the picture in a frame – even if it is digital. Make a shadow box or enhance a photo. Example for Father's Day: make a cast of you and your dad's hands while holding or shaking hands (get help from mom if needed) and put the cast in a shadow box with a light inside. Then print a picture of you and your dad (current or from when you were real young) on transparency paper and mount it in the frame in front of the cast so you can see the hands behind the photo. You can buy the box, paper, light and casting materials from a local craft store or of course on Amazon.
If you have a budding chef in the group, they will love this gift. Give someone the dry ingredients of your favorite recipe. This can be as simple as placing all the ingredients in a jar and making a creative label that includes the recipe or go bigger with a baskets of ingredients and a cookbook.
I love the cookbook spin on this! There are several cookbook that match hobbies, like The Runner's Cookbook or A Ballerina Cookbook, so you can match the book a favorite interest. The other option is to match the cookbook to a lifestyle choice like the paleo diet or art. Once you have the cookbook, mark a recipe or two and put all the dry ingredients in a basket with the book. Even if they aren't a budding chef, they will love the gift because it's about a major passion they have!
I absolutely love to travel and have gone on several extended trips overseas. One of the things I dread the most (besides missing the Cubs play!) is missing those special occasions with my friends and family. 🙁
Are you going on a walkabout and going to be out of touch for a long stretch of time? Then this gift idea is perfect for you! Go to a discount card shop and get a card for every occasion that you are going to miss and pre-write out all your cards. (You can go online and buy a greeting card assortment for super cheap as well.) If all the cards are for one person, you can give them to her in a nice box so that she can pull out the specified card from you on that special day. Make sure to write on the envelope what holiday or occasion it is for. You can also do small gifts for those really special occasions.
If you have multiple cards or gifts for different people, I suggest finding a helper that will hand out or mail out the cards and packages for you when the time comes. With forever stamps you can pre-stamp everything without worrying about postage increases!
Becoming a parent can be overwhelming, especially the first time around. Believe me, I was a first time parent at 42 and I am not sure overwhelming even covers it! So here is the perfect gift for Parents-to-Be, welcome home baby or even that 1st birthday... a gift certificate for a Baby Proofing Professional. These professionals specialize in home child safety and can identify risks and provide the best child safety products as well as install them properly. You know I like to bundle with a physical gift so you can always wrap up some simple outlet plugs to go along withthe gift card!
PLEASE NOTE: if you give this gift as a baby shower gift or soon after the baby arrives, make sure that there is no expiration date on this gift. Time can get away from new parents and you want to make sure it is still good when they are ready to use it.
Every lady LOVES a romantic dinner out, but men please - go the extra distance for a special occasion. Guys you'll need a buddy's help for this one. While you’re taking your lady out to a romantic dinner have your buddy set-up your bedroom for dessert in bed. Get a special dessert, set it out on a tray in the middle of the bed, add a bottle of wine, some roses petals and candles – ok yes this can get cheesy, but I am telling you all her friends will know about this dessert! It's gold for us ladies: 1) we get to feel ultra special and 2) we get to brag about it to all our friends!
All of us have a person in our life that has a special cause they work on. Instead of planning a birthday party or dinner for them, put on a fundraising event for their favorite charity. I know …you need the gift in 2 days! Make a donation to their favorite charity or let them decide how to spend the funds by giving them a gift certificate for an organization like Kiva.
This also a great way to teach your kids about the importance of giving back. Let them pick a charity and help them throw a fundraiser. Even a simple lemonade stand for clean water makes an impact and great memories!

Yeah- me too! But it is an honor and a wonderful way to let the bride and groom know that you were truly honored to be apart of their day is with a special 1st anniversary gift. Take small things from the wedding and turn it into a piece of wedding memorabilia such as a picture frame, wall decoration or memory box.
For one of my best friends, I took the champagne bottle from the first toast (must get it before it gets tossed in the trash!) and I had it flatted by a local glass artist. Of course, remove the label first! Then I placed the wedding invitation where the label use to be, and use the ribbon from my flowers to make a wall decoration. It turned out perfect and they really loved the gift and the memories it brought back. See the full post A Must Read Message ON a Bottle for complete details.
Instead of sending a traditional card, send your well wishes in a more creative way. You can send notes on things like bouncing balls, sports balls, coconuts, plastic bottles... even potatoes! You do not need to place these items in a box. Write your note in permanent marker and stick some stamps on it. I got this slice of cake and LOVED IT!
